How do you care for orchids?

I am thinking of trying one more time to have an orchid since I finally killed the first one after watching it never bloom again. I really need to know the best way to care for them. Can some of you tell give me a simple "instruction manual"(room temperature, lighting, watering, etc.) I live in central North Carolina...humid summers, dry indoors in winter.

During the summer outside in the partial shade under some pine trees. In the winter indoors under lights and in west facing window.
